DEBATE RE LIFTING OF EU RESTRICTIVE MEASURES

ZIMBABWE:  DEBATE RE LIFTING OF EU RESTRICTIVE MEASURES AGAINST 10 ZANU PF OFFICIALS AND THE ZIMBABWE DEFENCE INDUSTRIES (ZDI)

The Mike Campbell Foundation joins Zimbabweans in-country and worldwide in their deep concern that the European Union is considering lifting the remaining restrictive measures against 10 ZANU PF officials and the regime-linked arms supplier, Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI).

Before you make your decision, we would be grateful if you would read our attached report, dated 14 February 2014:

WHY THE EUROPEAN UNION

SHOULD NOT LIFT RESTRICTIVE MEASURES ON

ZIMBABWEAN HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSERS

ZANU PF HAS RETAINED POWER SINCE 1980 THROUGH VIOLENCE AND INTIMIDATION:

NOTHING HAS CHANGED.....

The report provides an overview of President Mugabe’s strategies for retaining power from 2000 to the present day. They include ongoing human rights abuses as well as violence and intimidation on a horrifying scale prior to elections.  Many of the victims have been damaged for life, both physically and mentally.  Please note that the report contains some graphic images in this regard.

We include the link to a recent report from Zimbabwe’s Centre for Research and Development (CRD) which covers ongoing gross human rights abuses in the contentious Marange Diamond Fields.

We also raise issues such as patronage, high level corruption and greed on a staggering scale.

At the end of the 28-page report we ask this question:

What message will the EU send out to the international community if it lifts the targeted restrictions on individuals who have perpetrated human rights abuses and crimes against humanity in Zimbabwe?

We urge the decision-makers to retain targeted sanctions against the remainder of the ZANU PF individuals on the list, as well as the Zimbabwe Defence Industries.

Yours sincerely
